Asterisk,
VoIP,
WiFi, wireless, hybrid, analog/digital, call forwarding... all done.
It's done, it works... now the fun part — adding features, source code will be available for all features.
For the history of this project, check
VoIP where I explain the starting point, and what I set out to accomplish.
Note: the whole project was achieved with less than $1000, using existing machines, shopping on eBay... and obviously putting $0 value on my labor (but now that the research is done, there's so much less to do, since I publish all of my stumblings, findings, and code snippets).
What is it?
- Check out full VoIP System Description
- Real phone numbers throughout United States (California, Illinois, Washington), France, and Finland
- Local phone numbers in almost 200 locations (in 20 countries)
- Dialing into 35 countries at no cost (fixed monthly cost)
- Phones everywhere — Digital phones, speaker phones, wireless phones, analog phones... whatever is appropriate
- Call forwarding to cell phones and cabin, at no cost
- Individual extension and voicemail for everyone in the family
- A phone number/contact management system, with more features every day
And, yet... for those who are afraid of VoIP (I was...)
- I have 911 (and 411) access
- Phone calls work (inbound and outbound) if power goes out
- Quality is as good as with POTS
- Speaker phones are vastly superior to old phones
- Wireless VoIP phones provide roaming across our whole house, and neighborhood
An abbreviated list of features:
- Access numbers around the world, direct numbers in critical locales (Sunnyvale/CA, Lake Tahoe/CA, Chicago/IL, Paris/France, Helsinki/Finland, Seattle/WA)
- Additional access numbers (via extra dialing) in Dublin/Ireland, Milan/Italy, Stockholm/Sweden
- Auto attendant, allowing dialing of extension
- During nighttime (in California), phones ring quietly (kids sleep), option for caller to override
- Voice mail, system status, many automated features
- Blacklist, direct-route and call-forwarding all in one — see Asterisk DBget/DBput?
